There’s obviously a lot to digest in this list, but two of the biggest headlines from the recent reveals revolve around next-gen upgrades and next-gen version pricing. While many next-gen titles support free upgrades for current-gen games, NBA 2K21 only offers that path for those who choose to shell out $99 for the Mamba Forever Edition.

Even those who purchase the standard next-gen version, though, may be in for a bit of sticker shock, as the base price is $70. That’s $10 more than the $60 minimum established two console lifecycles ago. The NBA 2K franchise has earned a reputation for being one of the most money-hungry series on the planet, and these details suggest little change in that mindset, even in the midst of a global pandemic.

One thing that’s certain is fans will have to decide quickly if they’d like the most bang for their buck. While there’s a healthy assortment of preorder bonuses offered for all editions, the benefits of the standard game drop off heavily once the release date arrives. So, those who want to stay competitive might be more inclined to invest early instead of potentially paying more for the less-time-sensitive Mamba perks later on. There’s lots of devious stuff happening in this NBA 2K21 edition map, but it’s up to you to decide which package sounds the least predatory.

NBA 2K21 releases on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and Stadia September 4. Next-gen versions are set to arrive at a later date.
